This session will examine the reasons why Underserved Learners typically attain and progress less well than their more advantaged peers, and, more importantly, we will challenge the inevitability of this situation. Led by Rachel Macfarlane, author of the book ‘Making School Unmissable’, we will focus on the role of leaders in:
- Addressing assumptions and assuring aspiration
- Adapting language and terminology
- Forensic use of data
- Smart and ambitious target setting
- Forging deeper relationships
- Building belonging
- Considering purpose
- Sharing successes to build status and self-efficacy.
Rachel will share a wide range of high impact case studies, practical strategies and adaptable techniques from schools which have embedded an ‘equity rather than equality’ approach and created cultures in which all learners thrive.
Training objectives
- For designated teachers to feel proud of the role that they have as champions of virtual school cohorts and
- To feel inspired, empowered and equipped to ensure that underserved learners in their school are better served.
Learning outcomes
- Designated teachers will leave the conference with a deeper understanding of the link between being underserved and a low sense of belonging, status, self-efficacy, purpose and success
- To leave with a range of practical strategies and techniques for them and their colleagues to utilise to build these senses
- They will have conducted a preliminary audit of need and formulated an action plan for next steps to take back to work on with senior leaders.
