During this in-person training day, we will examine the reasons why Underserved Learners typically attain and progress less well than their more advantaged peers, and, more importantly, we will challenge the inevitability of this situation. Led by author and independent educational consultant Rachel Macfarlane and supported by the Norfolk Virtual School this session will focus on the role of leaders in:
- Addressing assumptions and assuring aspiration
- Adapting language and terminology
- Forensic use of data
- Smart and ambitious target setting
- Forging deeper relationships
- Building belonging
- Considering purpose
- Sharing successes to build status and self-efficacy.
Rachel will share a wide range of high impact case studies, practical strategies and adaptable techniques from schools which have embedded an ‘equity rather than equality’ approach and created cultures in which all learners thrive.
Delegates will leave feeling inspired, empowered and equipped to ensure that underserved learners in their school are better served.
Learning outcomes
- A deeper understanding of the link between being underserved and a low sense of belonging, status, self-efficacy, purpose and success
- A range of practical strategies and techniques to address these issues in schools
- A preliminary audit of need and an action plan.
Audience: Virtual School Designated Teachers and Senior Leaders from Norfolk Schools
