Online School Review

Like the in-school review, the VNET Online School Review has been developed so that you can share your school’s journey in a similar way but with an online approach.

The purpose of the review is to share your school’s journey of improvement with a highly experienced VNET Associate who will question you and your team to help you identify and reflect on the priorities and development in your school.  As well as giving coaching and leadership advice, they will work with you to ensure you are well placed to demonstrate the effectiveness of your school.

Following this session, the VNET associate will write a summary report to be shared with your school and (if appropriate) your Trust, which can form part of the school’s self-evaluation and external validation.

The day is split into two half-day sessions with a gap task in between.  The gap task would be based upon subject leaders visiting a lesson, and/or having a discussion with children, which is then discussed in the second session.

Coaching for a Highly Effective Top Level Phone Call

The rationale of this practice is to enable school leaders to rehearse their pre-inspection phone call in a low-stakes environment. It is likely the recipient of the call will have booked a time with a VNET Associate for it to take place.

Coaching is key to this approach and whether the coaching element takes part during or at the end of the conversation, it is vital to ensure there are learning points for the school leader which are shared and worked-through.

Curriculum Review

A VNET Curriculum review is led by one of the VNET Senior Associates.  The review will help you to reflect on the design of your school’s curriculum and how effective it is in securing good outcomes for the pupils in your school.

A VNET curriculum review will:

Provide the school with an external view of your school’s curriculum by looking at its strengths and areas for development through looking at the big picture and then a more focussed look at several individual subjects.

Working closely with the VNET associate, senior leaders will be able to identify next steps for curriculum development.

This review can be part of the annual review process in your school which forms your robust self-evaluation.  This work can be provided annually, as part of your membership in future years.

This will help you to articulate the developing effectiveness of your curriculum development.

English Deep Dive

Given the sharp focus on competency in early spelling, it is important that the teaching of English enables novice learners to embed skills and knowledge in reading, writing and spoken language so that they can transition into experts.

A Deep Dive into English/ Writing will evaluate the extent the curriculum is enabling pupils to be fluent in key transcriptional components and grammar.

It will also evaluate if there is sufficient focus being placed on the underpinning of spoken language required for later expertise in reading, writing and spoken language.

  • An evaluation of the school’s long-term overview for Reading and Writing.
  • An exploration of how progression is delivered through the three domains of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.
  • Discussion with the subject leader regarding the sequencing of knowledge and whether the curriculum is building readiness for ambitious content.
  • How effective are links between reading, writing and spoken language? Are such links coherently planned?

Communication and Vocabulary Review

During the past decade, we have seen increasing evidence relating to language development and vocabulary.

 There is a strong link between language and communication, vocabulary development and later attainment, indicating that language skills are among the best predictors of educational success.

In a communication and vocabulary review, schools will be provided with an evaluation of how their planned curriculum ensures wide-ranging and expanding knowledge of the spoken language and how the curriculum is enabling pupils to develop their knowledge and skills of spoken language over time.

A Communication and Vocabulary review will evaluate

The extent in which leaders prioritise pupils’ communication and language as the bedrock of future success in reading, writing and the acquisition of knowledge in a range of subjects.:

The quality of Language and interactions in EYFS;

Classroom activities that support language development;

The planned vocabulary that pupils will learn as they progress through the school’s curriculum.

Whether pupils know and remember the vocabulary they have been taught.

The extent in which pupils are building a store of knowledge about words they use.
