Maximising the Impact of TAs – new for 26/27!

This online programme of 8 sessions is designed to develop TA expertise and confidence in the classroom. It can be accessed by individuals or as a group INSET session. Each module contains a video tutorial, quiz and where appropriate supporting resources are provided to allow personal learning to turn instantly into professional practice.

How do we take part?

Modules:

Session 1: Roles and Responsibilities of Teaching Assistants

Objective: To develop an understanding of the wider roles and responsibilities of teaching assistants in the classroom, with a particular focus on supporting pupils with additional needs.

Session 2: Effective Behaviour Management

Objective: To understand how consistency and the use of clear, relentless routines positively impact behaviour management in the classroom.

Session 3: Supporting Teaching and Learning towards Independence

Objective: To understand how to use the EEF’s Scaffolding Framework to shift their default approach from task completion to building genuine, lasting pupil independence — starting always with the least amount of support first.

Session 4: Supporting 1:1 Readers

Objective: To develop TAs’ confidence and skill in supporting 1:1 reading sessions by using effective questioning, promoting reading fluency, and applying appropriate phonics strategies to help pupils become more capable and independent readers.

Session 5: Supporting Handwriting

Objective: To equip TAs with the knowledge and practical strategies to support pupils’ handwriting development, including modelling correct letter formation, establishing effective ready-to-write routines, and applying best practice to help pupils build confidence, control, and consistency in their writing.

Session 6: Supporting Sentences

Objective: To build TAs’ confidence in supporting pupils with sentence construction, from securing understanding of single clause sentences and accurate full stop use, to exploring practical strategies that help pupils combine clauses to write with greater complexity and control.

Session 7: Supporting Maths with CPA

Objective: To build confidence in using the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach,
including manipulatives and visual representations, when supporting pupils in maths
lessons.

Session 8: Supporting Fluency in Maths

Objective: To develop an understanding of how to effectively support pupils’ fluency and reasoning skills within maths lessons.

Ruth McGlone

Principal Consultant

Ruth has 15 years of working in Norfolk Schools and just under 10 years as a Headteacher, leading a school through some challenging circumstances. As a Headteacher who has led a school through Covid-19 she is very well placed to appreciate the pressures on TAs today.

Ruth has worked as a System Leader as part of the Sheringham Teaching School Alliance and has been active in supporting the development of Mastery Mathematics in West Norfolk alongside the Cambridge Maths Hub.

Emma Adcock

Emma has just under twenty years of experience in the education sector, ten years of which she has spent working as an English Consultant for Norfolk Schools. She is a former head teacher, system leader and advanced skills teacher. She regularly provides additional leadership capacity for schools. This additional leadership has previously included: acting head positions, part-time assistant head roles and she has worked across schools as a teaching and learning coach to support Quality First Teaching. Emma is also an experienced trainer who regularly provides training for VNET schools on the following: curriculum design, subject leadership, Reading, Writing, Spelling and the explicit teaching of vocabulary.
