A Day of Welcome – Asylum Speakers

Wednesday, May 15, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Asylum Speakers is a media platform amplifying the voices of those impacted by displacement. In this session we will hear from founder Jaz O’Hara and her Eritrean foster brother Meseret Bereket who left his country as an unaccompanied child, making the journey to the UK in order to find safety, and how him joining Jaz’s family had a life-changing impact on them both.

Inspired by Meseret (Mez)’s journey, Jaz went on to write a book, host a podcast, make films and run a charity all dedicated to supporting refugees and asylum seekers. Together Jaz and Mez are dedicated to challenging the fear-based narrative of today’s media and this motivational session is not just informative and educational about migration, but will leave you feeling inspired to follow your own life’s purpose.

This webcast is designed for pupil voice groups at secondary schools in the UK.

After the webcast the pupils will be invited to plan how their school should mark A Day of Welcome and Refugee Week in June. They will also be challenged to think about how to make their school a more welcoming place for pupils who are seeking sanctuary or new to the community.

This live event forms part of A Day of Welcome, a day of solidarity and learning in schools that aims to build a culture of welcome and understanding for refugees and asylum seekers. This celebration is designed to support schools and families in marking Refugee Week (17-23 June) and to send a clear message that for those in need of sanctuary, our communities are welcoming places.

By registering to take part in the webcast, you are participating in A Day of Welcome. VNET will share your contact details with the team at A Day of Welcome who will be in touch with further activities and ideas that you could use as a complement to the webcast in order to mark A Day of Welcome and Refugee Week.
