This training will explore the needs of pupils with complex profiles, including many autistic learners and those with developmental or learning differences who may rely on alternative ways to communicate. We will look at the barriers these pupils can face in school, particularly around communication, emotional regulation, and mental health. A key focus of the session is the effective use of visual supports – rather than simply introducing what visuals are, we will explore where to start and how to implement them successfully, in real classroom contexts.
Alongside practical strategies, the training will also introduce key theories that help us understand behaviour, communication, and wellbeing in learners with complex needs. We will reflect on the crucial role educators play in supporting pupils’ mental health, sense of safety, and ability to communicate.
