Challenge

VNET worked with school leaders to identify the steps needed to improve the sequencing of the curriculum to ensure a coherent progression of knowledge, vocabulary, and skills while embedding strategies that enhance pupils’ ability to recall and apply their learning over time.

Timescale

Summer 2022 – Summer 2024

Solution

Strategies:

  • Working alongside the SLT to source a cohesive, rigorous curriculum where knowledge is well-sequenced, builds on prior knowledge and supports future learning
  • Professional Development focused on enabling subject leaders to demonstrate the impact of the planned curriculum on outcomes in non-core subjects
  • Implementation of Pupil Book Study
  • Training governors on Pupil Book Study.

  • Outcomes

External curriculum reviews throughout 2023-2024 chart the school's progress in introducing a well-thought-out provision with enhanced opportunities in which pupils’ recall of the taught curriculum is now strong.

The school’s Ofsted Inspection in July 2024 demonstrates the progress.

“Leaders have developed a well-crafted curriculum that sets out exactly what pupils should learn and when. Teachers have deep subject knowledge and boundless enthusiasm due to their expert training.” https://files.ofsted.gov.uk/v1/file/50256972

    Benefits

The curriculum is now more cohesive, ensuring that pupils build on prior knowledge systematically and are better prepared to meet the demands of each stage of their education.
