Improving early writing to secure Good Level of Development in EYFS

Supporting School Improvement – Case Study

School Snapshot

Location: Rural West Norfolk, NOR 156,14.1% of the students are eligible for free school meals.
Ofsted: Requires Improvement (February 2023)

Challenge

The early learning goal (ELG) of writing was a weak area and a barrier for children getting achieving GLD in EYFS.

Timescale

Academic year 23/24

Solution

The school accessed VNET’s Early Writing Project (EWP), alongside bespoke work in EYFS to support the implementation.

Early Writing Project Strategies:

  • Developing a good understanding of how young children learn to write
  • Improve teaching of early writing through play and active learning
  • Developing the use of observation-led planning
  • Involving parents and carers in the development of their children’s communication, language and literacy skills
  • Enabling all children to develop creative and functional writing skills in meaningful contexts
  • Improving indoor and outdoor writing environments

  • Outcomes

In 2023 75% of the cohort achieved the ELG in writing. Following the intensive work on early writing, this rose to 80%. GLD for the cohort increased from 75% in 2023 to 80% 2024.

    Testimonial

“The writing project has had a positive impact on our results in writing as we have made many changes to encourage children to write for pleasure throughout the year. This is significant for the children who are more reluctant to write as they have been given a purpose for writing. All the staff have been involved in the project, in order to encourage writing inside, outside and at home. Parents have been involved which has raised the profile of writing for some children.” Jo Bramham EYFS Lead, Cherry Tree Infant School
