Securing Foundational Knowledge in Maths

Wednesday, April 21, 2027 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

What is foundational knowledge, and what is the impact if we don’t get it right?

Please join Ruth McGlone, Principal Consultant and Maths Specialist, for this online course with a focus on foundational knowledge and core concepts that pupils must be fluent. According to the Ofsted framework, if these building blocks aren’t secured in long-term memory, pupils suffer cognitive overload and have difficulty in building their understanding of mathematics in primary and beyond.

This session aims to understand what is meant by foundational knowledge and its importance within the Ofsted Framework, while reflecting on how mathematics foundational knowledge – such as number sense, cardinality, and composition – forms the key building blocks of learning. Additionally, it will share examples of how to ensure foundational knowledge is taught and embedded early on, including how it can be monitored by leaders for its impact.

Learning outcomes
  • Participants will be able to evaluate their current provision for foundational knowledge in mathematics, monitor it effectively and plan for pupils acquisition if they are not grasped early enough.
