Communication underpins every aspect of learning, behaviour, social interaction, and independence within the classroom. Within this session, we will explore how to enhance the everyday mainstream classroom into a communication-rich space that supports every pupil’s speaking, listening, and interaction skills. Drawing on inclusive classroom approaches, participants will develop a deeper understanding of the communication process, learn how to identify where breakdowns occur, and leave with practical strategies that they can be embedded immediately into everyday teaching practice.
Learning Outcomes
- Develop an understanding of the Communication Chain: Explore how pupils take information in, store it, and respond
- Develop a Total Communication Approach: Use Blank’s Levels of Language alongside visuals, schedules, and accessible communication tools to adapt questioning, scaffold understanding, and support participation for all learners
- Create enabling classroom environments: Identify and implement environmental adaptations that support attention, understanding, processing, interaction, and communication for all learners
- Boost interaction and participation: Develop pupils’ social communication skills, confidence, independence, and peer interaction through practical classroom strategies.
Audience: SENCOs and teachers in primary, secondary, mainstream and/or specialist schools.
This training is being delivered in partnership with The Parkside School.
