The vital role of supervision for school leaders

"You - you've got me? Who's got you?" – the vital role of supervision for school leaders

You might be old enough to remember this iconic phrase from the 1978 film ‘Superman’. During his first rescue of Lois Lane, she is shocked to be saved by this flying superhero and they have this exchange…

This is very reminiscent of the roles that our superhero senior leaders play. They are often working minor miracles daily, juggling a myriad of responsibilities, from ensuring high-quality teaching and learning to managing budgets, safeguarding children, and fostering positive relationships with the community. As Lois Lane points out, “Who’s got you?” Joking aside, we need to think seriously about who is supporting our headteachers and senior leaders.

The answer to this question may well lie in effective supervision. A space in which leaders can receive the support, guidance and reflection they need to navigate the complexities of their roles. In the context of experienced school leaders, supervision should be viewed as an essential collaborative, supportive, and developmental process. Its importance cannot be overstated.

Why is supervision crucial for school leaders?

1. Reduced Isolation and Enhanced Wellbeing

    • Leadership can be a lonely endeavour. Headteachers and senior leaders often carry significant burdens and make difficult decisions. Regular supervision provides a safe space to share concerns, anxieties, and challenges.
    • This support system can significantly reduce feelings of isolation and stress, promoting better mental wellbeing and preventing burnout.
    • It is a place to be heard, and to have a confidential professional conversation.

2. Improved Decision-Making and Problem-Solving

    • Supervision offers a platform for reflective practice. Leaders can explore complex situations, consider different perspectives, and develop more informed and effective solutions.
    • By discussing challenges with a trusted supervisor, leaders can gain clarity and identify potential blind spots.
    • This process allows for the refinement of decision-making skills.

3. Professional Growth and Development

    • Supervision facilitates continuous professional development by encouraging leaders to reflect on their practice and identify areas for improvement.
    • Supervisors can provide constructive feedback, offer guidance on leadership strategies, and support the development of new skills.
    • It allows for the exploration of new ideas, and the honing of current skills.

4. Enhanced Accountability and Ethical Practice

    • Supervision can help ensure that leaders are adhering to ethical standards and best practices.
    • It provides a mechanism for accountability, promoting transparency and responsible leadership.
    • It provides a space to discuss ethical dilemmas.

5. Improved School Effectiveness

    • By supporting the wellbeing and professional development of school leaders, supervision indirectly contributes to improved school effectiveness.
    • Effective leaders are better equipped to create a positive and supportive learning environment for staff and pupils.
    • Strong leadership drives school improvement.

What Does Effective Supervision Look Like?

Effective supervision for primary school leaders should be:

  • Collaborative: A partnership based on trust and mutual respect

  • Reflective: Encouraging leaders to critically examine their practice

  • Developmental: Focused on supporting professional growth and improvement

  • Confidential: Providing a safe space for open and honest dialogue

  • Regular: Scheduled sessions to ensure ongoing support.

Investing in Leadership Support

In a climate of increasing accountability and pressure, it is essential that we invest in the wellbeing and professional development of our primary school leaders. Effective supervision is not a luxury, but a necessity. By providing our leaders with the support they need, we can empower them to create thriving schools where every child can succeed.

So please think about your superhero senior leaders, they are holding Lois Lane up, but who is holding them up?!
