Using bar modelling in maths to support calculations from EYFS to Year 6

Using pictorial representations is a key element of developing pupils’ conceptual understanding of mathematics. They can be used to support children’s understanding, building on the use of manipulatives, from simple calculations to fractions and ratio and proportion. This session will support subject knowledge and will exemplify how bar models can be used to support mathematics in EYFS to more complex problems in Year 6.

This session is for anyone who teaches mathematics who is not confident with how to use bar modelling in all areas of the maths curriculum. Developing examples from simple addition to solving fraction problems, it will enhance confidence in modelling these pictorial representations in the classroom, which will in turn support children’s conceptual understanding of abstract concepts.

Learning outcomes
  • Understand how bar modelling relates directly to the use of concrete resources in the development of abstract concepts
  • Develop confidence in using bar models to support children in their growing understanding of different mathematical calculations across the primary phase.

Target audience: Teachers, HLTAs and Teaching Assistants
