Supporting Teaching Assistants to provide the ‘Least Help First’ when supporting pupils in the classroom
Maximising the impact of teaching assistants is crucial for school leaders. If you’ve noticed pupils developing ‘learned helplessness’ or often asking, “What do I do next?” then this course is for you.
We will guide you through implementing the EEF’s ‘Scaffolding Framework’ and ‘Making the Best Use of Teaching Assistants’ to shift TA support from task completion to fostering deep learning.
The session will cover:
- Strategies to help pupils manage their own learning
- An introduction to a self-scaffolding framework
- Techniques to promote independent learning
- Practical tips for TAs on when and how to intervene effectively.
Learning outcomes
- To provide practical guidance to enable pupils to learn more independently
- To explore how teaching assistants can encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning through providing ‘least help first’.
Target audience: Senior Leaders and Teaching Assistants
After finishing this session you’ll be equipped to ensure that discussions with pupils build understanding and support their long-term learning.
