Effective use of TAs to support pupils with SEND in a mainstream school
This training session explores how Teaching Assistants can be deployed and supported effectively to enhance learning and inclusion for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The focus will be on how to support, empower and develop confidence in teaching assistants working with pupils with SEND.
The session will outline:
- Clarifying roles and responsibilities – what is the teaching assistants’ focus when working 1-1 with a SEND pupil?
- Developing rotation between staff and reducing isolated practice
- Developing teaching assistant roles into “key- workers” for the pupils and empowering their practice
- Formulating a system where teaching assistants are able to adapt their support to align with EHCP outcomes, assessment and planning
- Communication and independence is key to progressing pupils with SEND – this session will provide strategies to relay and use within the classroom to ensure inclusive practice.
By the end of the session, participants will understand how to create a balanced, inclusive classroom where TAs enable pupils with SEND to thrive, develop independence, and reach their full potential.
