Understanding the World Project 2023/24

Understanding the World with Jude Twani

Understanding the World (UtW) is an exciting area of learning that is not included in the end of year assessment of a good level of development, yet it is a critical aspect of children’s learning. It provides the context for learning in all other areas, an opportunity to develop meaningful vocabulary and taps into children’s innate curiosity. This interactive course will explore how the indoor, outdoor and local environments can be an effective ‘teacher’ of UtW. There will be ideas to work on as an EYFS team and examples of practice from other settings. The first full day of training will be thought provoking and provide a wealth of ideas to inform an action plan. A 30 minute online consultation half way between days 1 and 2 will support your development. The second day will look more closely at the early learning goals and involve some moderation of these followed by presentations by each setting of what they have achieved.

Audience

EYFS teachers in schools (Nursery and Reception), Preschool & Day Nursery practitioners working with 3-5s.

Project Aims:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of this area of learning and development
  • Refresh and inspire delegates
  • Build confidence in talking to subject leaders about how it links to their subject, particularly History, Geography and Science
  • Identify how the aspects of the educational programme can be promoted in continuous and enhanced provision.

Project outcomes:

  • Clearly plan how this area of learning is supported through the environment
  • Further develop curriculum plans based on UtW
  • List opportunities within the local community to use as a springboard for quality learning experiences
  • Identify key vocabulary and skills connected to UtW that will support later work in KS1
  • Moderation of the early learning goals for UtW.
