Sentence construction is an essential part of improving writing. In Key Stage 2, children learn how to structure sentences in different ways, before learning how to combine different sentence types to achieve certain effects in their writing.

This course, led by Emma Adcock, Director of Training and Research, will provide teachers with the necessary knowledge in the progression of sentence construction, alongside practical strategies and a suggested model for teaching specific sentence types.

It is suitable for teachers, teaching assistants and ECTs.

Objectives:

To support teachers in:

• Examining and understanding the progression of sentence construction across KS2 with a focus on age-related expectations.
• Providing a sharp focus on the key aspects of sentence construction that will make the most difference to improving the technical aspect of children’s writing.
• Explore engaging and creative strategies for teaching sentence construction.
