Building a Unit in Science
Wednesday, June 7, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
This course, led by Claire Seeley, Primary Science Teaching Trust, will unpick how to build a unit of science.
We will explore how to elicit prior knowledge as well as how to identify key knowledge and skills. We will also discuss the interplay between substantive and disciplinary knowledge, considering opportunities for direct instruction and science enquiry. Finally we will look at resources to support assessment for learning, how to identify a misconception and how to adapt the unit so that it meets the needs of all learners.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate how to plan a unit of work
- Highlight essential areas to consider when planning
- Explore the link between substantive and disciplinary knowledge.
We aim to develop and support primary teaching techniques by introducing a range of resources to support planning as well as also supporting assessment techniques by modelling how to put planning at the heart of teaching and learning.
